The opening of Saudi Arabia's new King ‘Abdullah University of Science and Technology,
which I blogged about earlier, has also been the pretext for
a visit by Syrian President Bashar al-Asad to the Kingdom, where he met with King ‘Abdullah and also with interim Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Seniora. So it also may be a step in the long-predicted but slow to emerge Syrian-Saudi
rapprochement.
Smart move by King Abdullah to skip the G-20 summit in Pittsburg in favor of his own domestic reform event? And a bonus in regional diplomacy? I would say yes, although it was not such an easy choice. Morevover, as Mu'ammar Qadhafi might say, it avoided jet lag.
