Robert C, Byrd and Iraq

Senator Robert C Byrd (D-WV), who died today at age 92, after a record-holding tenure in Congress, will be remembered with, at best, mixed feelings by many. A supporter of segregation in his younger days, he was known more recently for moving huge numbers of government projects to his home state. But he was also the Senate's unofficial historian, a self-made constitutional scholar. Whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him at the time (or since), his statement opposing the Iraq war was concise, forceful, and uncompromising, and seems a suitable way to remember him:
