Earlier this year, this blog noted the passing of Peter Gubser, longtime President of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA), specialist on modern Jordan, well known in the Washington Middle East community, and an old friend of MEI and the Journal, as well as myself. I noted then that after retirement Peter had written a book on Saladin. It appeared not long before he died, but like too many books these days, had a price ($136) that only institutions can afford. Yet Peter wanted this to be an accessible book, not just for specialists and scholars.
Now the book is available in paperback for a more affordable $38. Peter's daughter tells me that if there are enough sold, it will be kept in print. I plan to order a copy, and also want to call it to the attention of anyone interested in Saladin and the Crusader era, and of course Peter's many friends.
