Remember Paris, But Also Beirut, Ankara, Baghdad, Sinai...

Amid the mourning over the Paris attacks, I think it is particularly important to remember that the overwhelming majority of victims of the Islamic State have been in the Middle East. The 40+ dead in Beirut the day before the Paris attacks were innocent civilians as well. Sunnis and Shi‘a, Kurds and Assyrians and Yazidis, have died in the thousands, without everyone changing their Facebook profile pictures to the colors of the Lebanese or Syrian or Iraqi flag. Mourn for Paris to be sure,  but also for all victims.

Thanks for this,Mike. On the related issue of whether we value Christian lives more than Muslim lives, Obama had a useful point to make at his G-20 press conference in Antalya. He said that it was against what America stands for to apply a religious test to the needs of our fellow human beings. Of course, this will just confirm the view of some that he is a covert Muslim. The other day at my church, someone came up to me and asked what I was doing to prevent the beheading of Christians. The uninformed hysteria out there is growing.

Spot on, Ambassador Mack, the Republican candidates for president need to get a grip on their bed-wetting hysterical fear.
