Turbulence at Al-Ahram
An interesting post at The Arabist on some turbulence at Al-Ahram. The fate of newspapers worldwide is a matter of some interest, given the potential of new media, but the Egyptian media scene is particularly complex, dominated as it is by the big government dailies, but with an increasing voice for independent papers as well. Complicating matters is the fact that Al-Ahram's Center for Political and Strategic Studies is a think tank, and its senior fellows are more comparable to scholars at any other think tank than to newspaper employees, though this post certainly suggests they too are under pressure from the parent paper to avoid outside work.
